New Mexico State News
SANTA FE – New Mexico Senate Majority Floor Leader Peter Wirth announced Tuesday that he will not seek another term as Senate Majority Floor Leader ahead of the 2027 Legislative Session and will not run for re-election to the State Senate in 2028.
Wirth said he will complete his current term representing Senate District 25 through 2028 and remain an active member of the Senate during the remainder of his tenure.
In a statement, Wirth said he believes leadership includes preparing for future transitions and allowing opportunities for new leadership. He noted that the Senate Democratic Caucus will elect a new Majority Floor Leader before the start of the 2027 Legislative Session.
Wirth has served in the New Mexico Senate since 2009 after previously serving in the New Mexico House of Representatives from 2004 through 2008. He has held the position of Senate Majority Floor Leader since November 2016.
According to the announcement, Wirth plans to continue working on legislative issues during his remaining time in office and assist with the transition to new Senate leadership. He said he intends to remain fully engaged in representing his constituents and serving alongside fellow lawmakers through the completion of his term.
The Senate Democratic Caucus is expected to select a new Majority Floor Leader prior to the beginning of the 2027 legislative session.
