New Mexico State News<\/strong><\/p>\n

SANTA FE<\/strong> \u2013 A massive renewable energy project stretching across central New Mexico is expected to begin commercial operations this month, becoming the largest wind farm in the United States.<\/p>\n

The SunZia Wind project will generate approximately 3,650 megawatts of electricity from 916 wind turbines located primarily in Torrance, Lincoln and San Miguel counties. According to federal energy officials, the project is expected to produce enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes across the Southwest.<\/p>\n

The wind farm is part of the larger SunZia Wind and Transmission project, which also includes a transmission line spanning more than 550 miles. The transmission system will carry electricity generated in New Mexico to customers in Arizona and California.<\/p>\n

Developers say the project represents one of the largest renewable energy investments in New Mexico history and is expected to provide economic benefits through construction jobs, landowner payments and local tax revenues.<\/p>\n

Once fully operational, SunZia Wind is expected to surpass all existing wind farms in the nation in generating capacity, placing New Mexico at the center of one of the country’s largest renewable energy developments.<\/p>\n

Project officials have said the wind farm and transmission system are designed to help meet growing energy demands throughout the western United States while expanding the use of renewable energy resources.<\/p>\n
