DEMING – Luna County and all 33 New Mexico counties will see increased traffic enforcement throughout July as the New Mexico State Police conduct sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and driver’s license, registration, and insurance checkpoints.
The statewide effort is designed to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities caused by impaired driving while encouraging motorists to drive safely and responsibly.
According to the New Mexico State Police, the enforcement campaign combines highly visible checkpoints with saturation patrols, allowing officers to target impaired drivers while also enforcing traffic laws related to vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and valid driver’s licenses.
State officials said the ongoing campaign is intended to increase public awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and to help change public attitudes about impaired driving.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Division provides overtime grant funding to local law enforcement agencies for traffic safety enforcement, training, education, and equipment in high-risk areas across the state. Officials say the partnership helps strengthen road safety efforts and supports the state’s ENDWI initiative.
New Mexico State Police remind motorists that choosing a sober driver or arranging alternate transportation can save lives and help keep New Mexico roads safe.
