DEMING – Deming Public Schools has named Eugene Lewis as the district’s new Assistant Special Education Director.
Lewis brings more than 10 years of experience with Deming Public Schools, most recently serving as a Special Education Individualized Education Program (IEP) facilitator and teacher. In that role, he supported approximately 175 students at Deming High School, Mimbres Valley High School, and Early College High School while ensuring compliance with state and federal special education laws.
Before becoming an IEP facilitator, Lewis taught special education in both self-contained and inclusion classrooms. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Western New Mexico University, teaching Practical Applications of Special Education to future educators.
Prior to entering education, Lewis spent 25 years with the U.S. Border Patrol, retiring after serving in several leadership positions. He holds a Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education from Western New Mexico University and is licensed in New Mexico as a Level II Special Education PreK-12 teacher.
Chief Academic Officer Melanie Rinehart said Lewis demonstrated professionalism, thoughtful problem-solving skills, and a collaborative approach throughout the hiring process.
“We are excited to have him on our team,” Rinehart said. “His collaborative approach to working with both staff and families positions him well to build strong relationships across our community.”
As Assistant Special Education Director, Lewis will work alongside district leadership to support students, educators, and families while overseeing special education services, regulatory compliance, and continued program improvement.
Lewis said his goal is to build a department recognized for strong collaboration, outstanding service, and student success.
“I envision a department where high expectations are paired with the support each student needs to reach their full potential,” Lewis said. “By working closely with educators, families, and community partners, we can provide personalized services that promote both academic achievement and personal growth.”
Deming Public Schools officials said they look forward to the positive impact Lewis’ experience and leadership will have on the district’s special education programs.
