DEMING — Drivers in Deming, Columbus and throughout Luna County should expect construction activity, temporary lane closures and reduced speeds during the week of July 26 through Aug. 2.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation reminds motorists to slow down in work zones, obey all traffic control devices and watch for heavy equipment and workers. Conditions may change without notice, and double fines for speeding in work zones may be in effect.
At NM 11 and El Paso Avenue near the Columbus Port of Entry, paving has been completed, but contractor crews will remain on site for guardrail installation. Lane closures and flagging operations may be used as needed. Work is scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the project expected to continue through fall 2026.
NMDOT crews will also conduct chip seal operations on several Luna County roadways. Drivers may encounter flagging personnel, pilot vehicles and temporary stops from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Loose gravel may remain on treated roads for several days, and center striping will not be in place in work areas until the work is completed.
Chip seal and fog seal work includes various Interstate 10 frontage roads in the Akela and Gage areas, Frontage Road 1019, also known as Baker Road, NM 418 or Old Lordsburg Highway from milepost 0 to 14.1, NM 377 near Pecan Park, NM 143 or Stirrup Road near Rockhound State Park, and NM 198, Spring Canyon Road.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, follow directions from flagging crews and use caution when driving through all work zones.
