DEMING — A recent floodwater rescue in the Deming area is serving as a reminder for drivers to avoid attempting to cross roads, arroyos or low-water crossings covered by moving water during the summer rainy season.
U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Paso Sector, working with New Mexico State Police, rescued two people after the Chevrolet Silverado pickup they were riding in was swept into a field by floodwater, according to Border Patrol information released this week.
Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue personnel, known as BORSTAR, assisted with the response. No additional information on the occupants’ conditions was released.
Officials did not identify the exact location or time of the rescue, and the incident does not indicate widespread flooding across Deming. However, even brief heavy rainfall can quickly send water across rural roads and drainage areas in Luna County.
Drivers are urged to use caution whenever storms are in the area and never drive into water-covered roadways. The National Weather Service’s “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” message is simple: if water is covering the road, turn around and find another route.
