Historic Luna County Courthouse Adds Additional Security Measures

DEMING – Visitors to the Historic Luna County Courthouse will notice additional security measures as Luna County continues its commitment to providing a safe environment for employees and the public.

Luna County Manager Chris Brice told Deming News that the county recently installed a second walk-through metal detector at the courthouse as a proactive safety measure. The additional screening equipment is designed to enhance security for everyone conducting business in the building while maintaining convenient public access to county services.

The county invested approximately $10,000 for the additional metal detector using funds from the Luna County Commission’s budget.

In addition to the new screening equipment, Luna County has hired county employees to serve as courthouse security officers. Their responsibilities include assisting visitors, overseeing security procedures, and helping ensure the safety of employees, elected officials, and members of the public who visit the courthouse each day.

As part of the courthouse’s security procedures, visitors are required to sign in upon entering the building and sign out when leaving. Maintaining a visitor log provides an accurate record of those in the facility and is another step intended to improve safety and accountability.

Brice said the enhanced security measures are intended as a precaution to help provide a secure environment for both staff and the public while conducting county business.

Additional security at government buildings has become increasingly common in recent years. Many county courthouses and public facilities throughout New Mexico and across the nation have implemented metal detectors, visitor screening procedures, and dedicated security personnel as part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety.

The Historic Luna County Courthouse serves as the center of county government, with residents visiting daily to conduct business with numerous county offices. County officials say the latest improvements reflect Luna County’s ongoing commitment to providing a safe, welcoming, and secure environment for everyone who visits the courthouse.
