LORDSBURG – Cleanup operations remain underway near Lordsburg following a freight train derailment that sent approximately 50 rail cars off the tracks about 15 miles east of the city along the Interstate 10 corridor.
According to reporting from KKOB, Hidalgo County Fire Rescue District 1 said the derailment occurred Saturday afternoon. Emergency crews responded to the scene after dozens of rail cars left the tracks, and heavy equipment continues removing damaged rail cars while crews work to clear the rail line.
Investigators have not determined the cause of the derailment. However, officials are considering whether strong winds associated with a storm system that moved through the area may have been a contributing factor.
No injuries were reported. Officials have not announced when cleanup operations will be completed or when the affected section of railroad will return to service.
