DEMING – Deming students from kindergarten through high school have new opportunities for free after-school activities through programs administered by New Mexico State University, with everything from STEM and stop-motion animation to sports, music, carpentry and driver’s education among the offerings.
Andreal Chavez, Deming Public Schools Assistant Director of Extended Learning Services, spoke with Bravo Mic Communications News’ John Krehbiel about the programs and the opportunities now available to local students.
Funding through the 21st Century program provides teachers and supplies for participating activities. For STEM programs — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — the complete activity kit is provided at no charge to participating students or their parents. NMSU also provides teachers with the lesson plans needed for the programs.
Among the programs available are stop-motion animation, Literacy Launch Pad and Healthy Lifestyle activities.
Programs are being made available at Deming schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. They are held Monday through Thursday and currently run for approximately two hours after the regular school day ends.
Chavez said some programs could eventually expand to four hours. If that happens, additional pre-authorization from parents or guardians will be required.
Five programs have already started, with additional programs scheduled to begin next week.
Offerings vary depending on the school and age of the students. At the high school level, Career and Technical Education opportunities include carpentry and driver’s education, and Folklórico is also being offered. Memorial Elementary has a music program, while elementary schools have sports among their after-school opportunities.
Parents should be aware that although the activities take place in Deming schools, the after-school program is administered through New Mexico State University and is not part of the Deming Public Schools student information system.
That means families registering a child will need to provide their information again, even if the school district already has that information on file.
Parents interested in enrolling their children or learning which activities would best fit their child’s needs and interests should contact their child’s school. A Google registration form can be provided and must be completed before participation.
Information about individual programs is also being distributed through school flyers and social media.
