DEMING – New Mexico State Police are investigating a fatal dog attack that killed a 73-year-old Santa Rosa man Friday, August 28.
According to NMSP, Randy Wade was outside his home on Tapia Road when two pit bull-mix dogs belonging to 52-year-old James Campbell attacked him near a shed. Investigators determined the attack was unprovoked.
A woman who was staying at the home witnessed the attack and called for Campbell, who was inside, to help. Campbell secured the dogs in an enclosure and moved Wade to the front porch. Wade was found deceased, and the woman called 911.
Investigators said Campbell acknowledged knowing that his dogs had previously been deemed vicious. The dogs had reportedly been involved in an earlier attack and had recently been released from an animal shelter.
Campbell has been charged with Dangerous Dog Resulting in the Death of a Person, a third-degree felony.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau continues to investigate the incident.
