DEMING – DAGSHIP Rescue is celebrating a series of major developments, including new foundation funding, progress toward a $50,000 fundraising goal, extensive shelter improvements and 11 dog adoptions during a recent off-site event in Deming.
The organization announced it has received a $10,000 award from the Candis Stern Foundation to help fund its animal rescue work.
DAGSHIP Rescue also received a $5,000 grant from the Frost Foundation to support its continuing operations. The grant will be applied toward the organization’s effort to raise $50,000 in matching funds. DAGSHIP reports it has already raised more than $41,000 toward that goal.
Meanwhile, a benefactor is making possible a three-phase improvement project at the DAGSHIP Rescue shelter. The facility has been operating for approximately 10 years and is now in need of upgrades and improvements.
Phases I and II will focus on the outside kennels where dogs exercise during the day. Planned improvements include fencing upgrades, metal roofs and metal wind protection along the exterior walls.
Phase III will address additional outdoor kennel areas. Plans call for leveling the concrete floors, partially enclosing the kennels to provide greater protection from wind and rain, and installing industrial swamp coolers to help keep the animals more comfortable during hot weather.
Construction has begun, and DAGSHIP plans to share photographs as work progresses. The organization hopes to complete all three phases by the end of 2026.
The good news extends beyond fundraising and construction.
DAGSHIP Rescue reported 11 adoptions during its off-site adoption event Saturday at Cato’s in Deming. Following the event, three additional dogs were transferred to Lap Dog Rescue in Albuquerque.
The three transferred dogs were among the least-socialized Chihuahuas taken in from a hoarding case. The transfer will provide another opportunity for the dogs to receive the attention and care needed as they continue toward eventual placement.
DAGSHIP Rescue Director Beka is also working to address a backlog of spay and neuter procedures by coordinating surgeries through Arenas Valley Animal Clinic in Bayard.
Between the new grants, progress toward the matching-funds goal, major improvements underway at the shelter and another successful adoption event, DAGSHIP Rescue enters the final months of 2026 with several significant developments aimed at strengthening its ability to care for animals in Deming and Luna County.
