Deming Public Schools Graduation Rate Rises to 83 Percent

DEMING – Deming Public Schools’ four-year graduation rate rose from 77 to 83 percent, according to the district’s latest NM Vistas report card. The rate is above New Mexico’s 81 percent average. Because graduation data is reported a year later, the new figure reflects the class of 2025.

Deming High School posted an 85 percent graduation rate. Early College High School reported a rate of at least 90 percent and retained its “Spotlight” designation, the state’s highest recognition for schools in the top 25 percent. Early College also recorded 100 percent on the college and career readiness measure.

Across the district, math growth reached the 52nd percentile, compared with the statewide 50th percentile. College and career readiness was 91 percent, compared with 90 percent statewide. That measure includes student participation in college and career preparation, such as dual-credit courses and assessments.

Deming Public Schools said math proficiency rose by three percentage points and reading proficiency by one percentage point from the previous year. Among elementary schools, Columbus Elementary recorded math growth at the 68th percentile, followed by Bataan Elementary at the 67th percentile and Memorial Elementary at the 59th percentile.

Despite the gains, proficiency remained below statewide averages. Twenty-two percent of district students were proficient in math, compared with 26 percent statewide. Reading proficiency was 34 percent, compared with 43 percent statewide, while science proficiency was 25 percent, compared with 33 percent statewide. Regular attendance was 71 percent in Deming, compared with 72 percent across New Mexico.

“We appreciate the hard work of our teachers, staff, campus leadership and students in making steps forward,” Superintendent Nicholas Wohlgemuth said. “We celebrate the areas of growth and achievement but recognize the work still needed that lies ahead.”

The district said it will use the results to guide planning, educator development and decisions about resources.
