DEMING – Residents will have an opportunity to hear about local laws, available services and quality of life concerns at a homelessness forum Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Mimbres Valley Special Events Center, 2300 E. Pine St.
City Councilman Stephen Westenhofer and Luna County Commissioner Colette Chandler will open the forum. Luna County Attorney Charles Kretek is scheduled to discuss state laws and county ordinances, while Police Chief Sergio Lara will address city ordinances.
The agenda also includes a presentation on quality of life offenses by Magistrate Judge Chandler. Representatives of three organizations will discuss services currently offered: Margaret Fairman of Silver Linings, Lidia Vega Chavira of Desert Oasis and Jan Millis of Project Comunidad.
A public comment period is planned. Anyone wishing to speak is asked to sign in so there is an accurate record of the session. Comments will be limited to three minutes per person.
Westenhofer and Commissioner Chandler are scheduled to give closing remarks. The agenda lists presentations and public comment, but does not list a vote or proposed action.
