The New Mexico Department of Transportation announced that nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be available to inspect car seats and booster seats, helping families ensure the equipment is properly selected, installed and used.
The inspections are free and will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointments are necessary.
During the clinic, certified technicians will spend approximately 30 minutes per seat working directly with parents and caregivers. They will check for proper installation, correct fit, expiration dates, manufacturer recalls and other potential safety concerns.
Participants will also receive hands-on instruction about common car seat installation mistakes and have an opportunity to ask questions about safely transporting children.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring their child’s car seat, the car seat instruction manual, their vehicle owner’s manual and the child who normally uses the seat.
If technicians determine that a car seat is expired, damaged, recalled or otherwise unsafe, a replacement seat may be available for $35.
Replacement seats must be purchased with cash, and participants must bring the exact $35 amount because change will not be available. The child must also be present to qualify for a replacement seat.
The safety clinic is funded through the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Division and is open to the public.
