DEMING – The City of Deming is undertaking a natural gas line replacement project in the area of Florida and Walnut streets, with work expected to continue through the end of December. Residents in the affected area will experience temporary interruptions in natural gas service as crews replace aging infrastructure.
Deming City Administrator Aaron Sera said the natural gas lines in the area are older and require routine maintenance and replacement as part of the city’s ongoing infrastructure maintenance efforts.
City of Deming Public Information Officer Valeria Adame told Deming News that homeowners in the affected neighborhoods have already been notified by letter about the upcoming work and what they can expect during the replacement process.
How the Gas Service Replacement Process Will Work
According to Adame, the replacement project will be conducted one residence at a time to minimize disruptions to homeowners.
Before beginning work at an affected home, city crews will personally contact the residents at their door and explain that their natural gas service will need to be temporarily shut off.
Once the residents have been notified, crews will shut off the gas supply to that individual residence and complete the necessary gas line replacement work.
After the work is completed, a licensed plumber hired by the city will inspect and certify the work before natural gas service is restored.
Adame explained that the city has contracted with a licensed plumber specifically to inspect and certify the work associated with the gas line replacement project.
However, if problems are discovered with a homeowner’s gas appliances, the homeowner will be responsible for hiring a licensed plumber to make the necessary repairs.
Once the required work has been completed and certified, natural gas service will be restored to the residence. City crews will then proceed to the next affected home on the block and repeat the process.
The city is handling the replacement process individually rather than shutting off natural gas service to an entire neighborhood at once.
Information for Affected Residents
City officials are encouraging residents in the Florida and Walnut streets area to be aware of the ongoing work and the possibility of temporary interruptions in their natural gas service.
While each residence will be handled individually, the city has not provided a specific estimate for how long service will be interrupted at each home.
Residents with questions about the replacement project, the service interruption process or how their homes may be affected are encouraged to contact the City of Deming Public Works Department at 575-546-8848, extension 2030.
The natural gas line replacement project is expected to continue through the end of 2026.
