Suspicious Incident at Local Popeyes Restaurant

DEMING – Deming Police are investigating a suspicious incident that occurred Saturday night at the local Popeyes restaurant after two employees became ill following possible exposure to an unknown substance in a restroom.

According to Deming Police Chief Sergio Lara, officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to the restaurant at approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday after a report of a suspicious subject in the restroom.

Police say two employees later entered the restroom and observed signs that the individual had been smoking, or had recently smoked, an unknown substance. Shortly afterward, both employees began feeling ill and required medical attention. The unidentified subject left the scene before first responders arrived.

The employees were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Initial concerns centered on possible exposure to fentanyl or another hazardous substance.

Sgt. Madrid secured the restaurant and requested assistance from the Las Cruces Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team and the Luna County Emergency Management Unit. The scene remained under precautionary control until approximately 3:00 a.m. Sunday, when it was determined to be safe and released.

Police say the incident appears to be isolated but are encouraging local businesses to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, especially when individuals remain in restrooms for extended periods without seeking services.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released.
