DEMING – Motorists traveling through Luna County this week should plan for ongoing construction activity on several major routes, including Interstate 10, NM 11, and multiple local roadways, according to transportation officials. The traffic report covers the period from April 5 through April 12, 2026, with additional projects scheduled to begin later this month.
In all construction zones, drivers are reminded to slow down, obey posted signs, and remain alert for heavy equipment and roadway personnel. Conditions may change without notice, and double fines for speeding in work zones may be in effect.
Several bridge repair projects are currently underway along Interstate 10. Crews with Hasse Contracting Company are repairing bridge decks between mile markers 102 and 105 near Deming and Akela. Work began at mile marker 102 in the westbound driving lane and will shift to the passing lane as needed. One lane will remain open at all times, with overnight lane closures continuing until repairs are completed. Once finished, crews will move to the eastbound bridge at mile marker 105. That project is expected to continue through May 2026.
Additional bridge work is scheduled to begin later this month. Starting April 15, A Mountain Construction will begin repairs to the eastbound bridge at mile marker 81 near Deming, with a 10-foot width restriction in place and overnight lane closures expected during construction. Another project is set to begin April 22 at mile marker 5 near Road Forks, where westbound traffic will not be able to cross over to access NM 80 southbound. Northbound traffic on NM 80 will still be able to turn right onto eastbound I-10, but left turns onto westbound I-10 will not be permitted. Both projects are anticipated to continue through May 2026.
Work is also continuing along NM 11 near the Columbus Port of Entry, where Morrow Enterprises is constructing a concrete box culvert at the intersection of NM 11 and El Paso Avenue, just north of the port. Speed limits have been reduced in the area, and drivers should expect traffic control devices and construction crews on site. Work is scheduled Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with completion expected by Fall 2026.
Meanwhile, chip seal operations are underway on several roadways throughout Luna County. The New Mexico Department of Transportation has begun sealing work in and around Deming, where drivers can expect flagging crews, pilot vehicles, and occasional temporary stops. Loose gravel may remain on road surfaces for several days following treatment, and center striping will be absent in active work zones until projects are completed.
Roadways scheduled for chip sealing include State Park Road 1007 at Pancho Villa State Park, various Interstate 10 frontage roads in the Gage and Akela areas, NM 418 from milepost 0 to 14.1, also known as Old Lordsburg Highway, and NM 377 from milepost 0 to 1.8 in the Pecan Park area.
Officials also noted that fog sealing operations on NM 9 between mile markers 86 and 110 near Columbus have been completed from Animas to the Doña Ana–Luna County line. The roadway is now scheduled for striping.
Transportation officials encourage drivers to allow extra travel time, remain patient in work zones, and stay alert for changing traffic patterns throughout the week.
