DEMING \u2013 Deming Public Schools Athletic and Activities Director Nelson Diaz is working to build stability, accountability and long-term success within the district’s athletic programs as he prepares for the upcoming school year.<\/p>\n
According to a report in the Deming Headlight by Billy Armendariz, Diaz stepped into the leadership role after serving on an interim basis beginning in the fall of last year. The interim designation was later removed, making Diaz the permanent head of the athletics and activities department.<\/p>\n
Diaz, who brings 19 years of experience in education, much of it at Cobre High School in Bayard, said he has been impressed by the strong support Deming residents show for their student-athletes and school programs.<\/p>\n
One of his first priorities was filling varsity head coaching positions before off-season programs began. Among the most significant hires was the appointment of James Fetrow as head football coach following the departure of Richard Perales. Perales guided the Wildcats to back-to-back district championships and three consecutive playoff appearances during his tenure.<\/p>\n
Diaz said retaining coaches and creating consistency throughout athletic programs remains a major focus. Several sports, including volleyball, boys basketball and softball, have experienced frequent coaching turnover in recent years, creating challenges in building long-term success.<\/p>\n
To address those concerns, Diaz has worked to fill key coaching positions throughout the district. New and returning varsity head coaches include Abby Moyer in volleyball, Elsa Rodriguez in cheer, Sanford Walker in cross country and track and field, Angel Del Rio in boys soccer, Evelyn Reyes in girls soccer, Juan Gonzales in boys basketball, Rylan Larko in wrestling, Manny Chavez in baseball, Creston Molina in softball, J.D. Longoria in tennis, Nick Williams in powerlifting and Deryk Perales in golf.<\/p>\n
Diaz said the district is introducing a culture initiative known as “The Standard: The Wildcat Way,” which emphasizes accountability among athletes and coaches while establishing expectations for all athletic programs.<\/p>\n
He also stressed the importance of supporting coaches through professional development opportunities and maintaining open communication with parents. Diaz said parents are important advocates for their children and should have opportunities to better understand the standards and expectations within Deming High School athletics.<\/p>\n
Several coaching positions at lower levels remain open, and district officials hope to fill those vacancies before the start of the next school year.<\/p>\n
