DEMING \u2013 The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Luna County, including Deming and Columbus, as dangerous heat settles into southern New Mexico this week.<\/p>\n

The first advisory remains in effect from noon until 9 p.m. Monday. A second Heat Advisory will be in effect from noon Tuesday until 9 p.m. Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Forecasters say temperatures could reach as high as 108 degrees across portions of the lower Mimbres Basin and surrounding desert areas.<\/p>\n

The prolonged heat increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for people working outdoors, older adults, young children, and those without access to air conditioning.<\/p>\n

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours whenever possible.<\/p>\n

Officials also recommend taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations during outdoor work. Anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion should be moved to a cool place immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires calling 911.<\/p>\n

The advisory remains in effect through Wednesday evening as temperatures continue to climb across the region.<\/p>\n
