SANTA FE \u2013 A woman in her 70s from Bernalillo County and a man in his 30s from Otero County have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.<\/p>\n
The Bernalillo County woman is hospitalized. The Otero County man is recovering at home.<\/p>\n
West Nile virus is spread by mosquitoes and can cause serious illness in people, horses and birds. Health officials are urging New Mexicans to take precautions against mosquito bites, particularly during the summer months.<\/p>\n
\u201cWest Nile virus is spread by mosquitoes and can cause severe illness in people, horses, and birds,\u201d said Dr. Erin Phipps, the state public health veterinarian for NMDOH. \u201cIt is important to protect yourselves from mosquito bites, particularly during summer months.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Department of Health and its partner agencies have increased mosquito surveillance, including trapping and disease testing, to help communities identify and reduce mosquito-borne disease risks.<\/p>\n
Health officials recommend using an EPA-approved insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk, removing standing water around homes, screening rain barrels and keeping window and door screens in good condition.<\/p>\n
Symptoms can include headache, fever, muscle and joint aches, nausea and fatigue. Most people have mild symptoms or none at all, but about 1% develop serious illness that can include neck stiffness, confusion, tremors, seizures, muscle weakness or paralysis.<\/p>\n
There is no vaccine or specific medication for West Nile virus in humans. Adults 50 and older and people with certain underlying health conditions face a higher risk of serious illness.<\/p>\n
New Mexico has averaged 41 West Nile virus cases per year over the past five years. Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact a healthcare provider.<\/p>\n
