DEMING \u2013 With thousands of people expected to gather for the 47th Annual Great American Duck Race this weekend, Luna County officials are reminding parents and caregivers that a few minutes of preparation can make a major difference if a child becomes separated from their family in a crowded area.<\/p>\n

The Luna County Manager\u2019s Office is sharing child-safety information prepared by Luna County Emergency Management ahead of the Duck Race, which runs August 20 through 23 at McKinley Duck Downs and Luna County Courthouse Park.<\/p>\n

Officials recommend parents take a full-body photo of their child in the clothing they are wearing before heading to the festivities. Children should be dressed in bright or distinctive colors that make them easier to spot in a crowd. Parents are also encouraged to write their cell phone number on an identification wristband or temporary tattoo and teach children their first and last name along with a parent’s phone number.<\/p>\n

Families should establish a meeting place before entering the event and make sure children know what uniformed law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and event volunteers look like.<\/p>\n

Once inside the event, young children should remain within arm’s reach, particularly in dense crowds. Officials recommend holding hands and staying near the edges of large crowds rather than moving through the middle. Parents should also point out restrooms, first-aid locations and lost-child or information areas.<\/p>\n

August temperatures in Deming can also present a concern. Families are reminded to provide children with water, shade and sunscreen throughout the day and take a current photo if a child changes clothes, removes a shirt or has face paint applied.<\/p>\n

If a child becomes separated from their family, officials say the child should stay where they are if it is safe rather than wandering around looking for relatives. Children should look for a uniformed deputy, police officer, firefighter, EMS worker or event staff member and should never leave the area with an unfamiliar person.<\/p>\n

Parents who discover a child is missing should immediately notify the nearest event staff member or law enforcement officer and provide the child’s most recent photo, clothing description, age and last-known location. Parents should keep their cell phones available because authorities may attempt to contact them.<\/p>\n

The message from county officials is simple: enjoy the Great American Duck Race, plan ahead, keep families together and make sure children know what to do if they become separated.<\/p>\n
