Cases typically occur during late summer, but the New Mexico Department of Health said this year\u2019s season may last longer than usual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith above-average rain and heat forecasted for New Mexico through October, mosquito season may last longer than usual,\u201d said Dr. Erin Phipps, state public health veterinarian for NMDOH. \u201cWest Nile virus is expected to persist until the first local hard freeze.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People taking medications that deplete or modify B cells may face an increased risk of severe illness from viruses such as West Nile. NMDOH recommends discussing medications and medical conditions that affect the immune system with a healthcare provider.<\/p>\n<p>Residents should contact their doctor if they experience concerning symptoms including headaches, fever, weakness, loss of balance or confusion. Patients should not discontinue prescribed medications unless directed by their doctor.<\/p>\n<p>To reduce the risk of mosquito bites, NMDOH recommends:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using an EPA-approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus\/para-menthane-diol.<\/li>\n<li>Wearing long sleeves and pants around dawn and dusk.<\/li>\n<li>Emptying containers that collect standing water.<\/li>\n<li>Draining birdbaths, wading pools and plant saucers weekly.<\/li>\n<li>Keeping rain barrels tightly screened.<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring window and door screens fit securely and contain no holes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Questions about West Nile virus may be directed to the NMDOH Helpline at <strong>1-833-SWNURSE<\/strong> or <strong>1-833-796-8773<\/strong>.
