DEMING \u2014 Deming Public Schools officials were in Santa Fe last week during the 30-day New Mexico Legislative Session, representing the district\u2019s priorities and offering input on education-related legislation currently under consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
John Krehbiel spoke with Charles Turner, Government Affairs Coordinator for Deming Public Schools, who said the trip was productive. Turner explained that the 30-day session, which began at noon on January 20, focuses primarily on financial matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turner said education funding was secured during the session and is now awaiting final action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One bill discussed would move the New Mexico Office of Special Education, which currently operates as a standalone department, under the Public Education Department. Turner said the change would affect administrative oversight while maintaining a focus on services for students with special education needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Turner said New Mexico funds public schools using a unit value per student membership formula. Under the proposed budget, Deming Public Schools are expected to see approximately a 2.5 percent increase per student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Teacher health insurance premiums would also be adjusted under the legislation, moving educators to the state\u2019s 80\/20 insurance funding model, consistent with other state employees. In addition, the appropriations bill includes a one percent increase in employee salaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All legislation approved during the session now awaits action by Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham, who will sign or veto the bills. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
