DEMING – Western New Mexico University’s Kinesiology program is combining science, research and community outreach through innovative fitness and wellness programs that give students real-world experience while improving health outcomes for residents of all ages.<\/p>\n

DEMING – Western New Mexico University is redefining how students learn about health, fitness and human performance through a Kinesiology program that combines STEM education with hands-on community service.<\/p>\n

Faculty members Dr. Garrett Peltonen and Dr. Takahiro Sato are leading a program that emphasizes the connection between scientific research and practical application, giving students opportunities to work directly with community members while developing professional skills.<\/p>\n

Kinesiology, the study of human movement, is divided into two primary areas at WNMU: exercise physiology and sport psychology. Peltonen specializes in exercise physiology, focusing on how the body responds to physical activity, while Sato examines the psychological and social factors that influence human movement, motivation and athletic performance.<\/p>\n

The program’s philosophy centers on the idea that exercise serves as a powerful tool for improving overall health and well-being.<\/p>\n

“Our students aren’t just reading about health; they are leading it,” Peltonen said.<\/p>\n

One of the program’s signature initiatives is the Get Fit Seniors program, offered in partnership with the Western Institute of Lifelong Learning. The 12-week fitness course provides older adults with structured exercise opportunities while allowing advanced kinesiology students to serve as instructors and mentors.<\/p>\n

Students also gain practical experience through the WNMU Kids’ Bicycle Program, which introduces elementary-age children to physical activity and cycling skills. The seven-week program gives university students valuable experience working with youth while promoting healthy lifestyles among local children.<\/p>\n

Faculty members say the benefits of exercise extend far beyond physical fitness.<\/p>\n

“There is not a system in the human body that physical activity does not have a positive benefit on,” Peltonen said, noting that research has shown exercise can positively affect brain health and cognitive function.<\/p>\n

Sato emphasized that movement also supports mental and social well-being, helping everyone from competitive athletes to individuals recovering from illness or injury.<\/p>\n

The program incorporates advanced scientific equipment and research methods typically found in larger institutions. Students have access to tools such as metabolic testing systems used to measure cardiovascular fitness, metabolic rates and other indicators of health and performance.<\/p>\n

Faculty members also stress the importance of scientific literacy, teaching students how to evaluate peer-reviewed research and separate evidence-based information from common health myths and misconceptions.<\/p>\n

Both professors believe their personal commitment to active lifestyles helps inspire students.<\/p>\n

“We practice what we teach,” Peltonen said.<\/p>\n

“We aren’t just talking about it; we are out there running, biking, and living it. That passion is what we pass on to our students,” Sato added.<\/p>\n

University officials say the program continues to expand opportunities for students while strengthening connections between WNMU and the surrounding community through health, wellness and educational outreach initiatives.<\/p>\n
