DEMING \u2013 New Mexico has launched what state officials describe as the nation’s most generous state-funded physician loan repayment program, offering eligible licensed physicians up to $75,000 per year for four years, for a total of up to $300,000 in student loan repayment assistance.<\/p>\n
The expansion was approved during the 2026 legislative session through House Bill 66 and is intended to help address physician shortages across New Mexico. State officials report that 32 of the state’s 33 counties face critical healthcare workforce shortages.<\/p>\n
Under the expanded Health Professional Loan Repayment Program, physicians who commit to serving in eligible shortage areas may receive up to $300,000 over a four-year service obligation. More than 25 additional healthcare professions remain eligible for loan repayment assistance, although at lower award levels. Applications opened June 1 and are scheduled to close July 31, 2026.<\/p>\n
The program represents a major increase from previous physician award levels. Previously, physician loan repayment assistance was capped at $25,000 per year over three years. The new program provides $75,000 per year over four years.<\/p>\n
House Bill 66 includes a $25 million annual appropriation for the program, with at least half of the available funds reserved for physician awards.<\/p>\n
According to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office, the program has grown dramatically since 2019, with more than 1,200 nurses, physicians and mental health professionals currently receiving assistance statewide. State officials say approximately 96 percent of participants remain in New Mexico to practice after entering the program.<\/p>\n
State officials also report that New Mexico faces a shortage of more than 5,000 healthcare professionals. Nearly 40 percent of the state’s doctors are age 60 or older and expected to retire by 2030.<\/p>\n
While public records do not identify individual recipients by name, the expanded program could prove significant for Luna County, which has long been considered a medically underserved area and continues to compete with larger communities for physicians, specialists, nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n
Local recruitment efforts are already underway. Mimbres Memorial Hospital and affiliated medical organizations continue to recruit healthcare providers and advertise loan repayment opportunities as part of employment packages. The availability of substantial student debt relief may give rural communities such as Deming an additional tool in attracting physicians who might otherwise choose larger metropolitan areas.<\/p>\n

Healthcare leaders across New Mexico have identified physician recruitment and retention as one of the state’s greatest healthcare challenges. Medical school debt often exceeds hundreds of thousands of dollars, making rural recruitment difficult. State lawmakers hope the expanded loan repayment program will encourage more physicians to establish practices in communities such as Deming, helping residents access care closer to home and reducing the need to travel long distances for medical services.<\/p>\n
Although no public records were immediately available showing how many Luna County providers currently participate in the program, local healthcare organizations stand to benefit from one of the largest physician recruitment incentives currently offered by any state in the nation.<\/p>\n
For communities such as Deming, the success of the program may ultimately be measured by whether additional physicians and healthcare professionals choose to call Luna County home.<\/p>\n
