DEMING – A 40-year-old Deming man is facing four criminal charges following an August shooting that reportedly left another man with a gunshot wound to the face.
Dustin Armendariz, writing for the Deming Headlight, originally reported the allegations and details contained in a criminal complaint filed in Luna County Magistrate Court.
Andrew Calanchi is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, tampering with evidence and negligent use of a deadly weapon.
The charges stem from an incident reported Wednesday, Aug. 26, on Poplar Street between Ruby and Pearl streets. According to the complaint, Calanchi allegedly fired a gun at Adrian Mora, striking him in the face.
Court documents characterize Mora’s injury as great bodily harm but do not disclose its severity or provide information about his condition. The attempted murder allegation claims Calanchi took a direct step toward committing a deliberate killing but did not complete the act.
Attempting to commit a capital or first-degree felony is classified as a second-degree felony under New Mexico law. The aggravated battery count, a third-degree felony, alleges that Calanchi injured Mora using a deadly weapon.
Investigators later located a firearm concealed inside a tool bucket in the bed of a truck at a residence on South Santa Monica Street, according to the complaint. Police allege the weapon was hidden in an effort to hinder Calanchi’s apprehension, prosecution or conviction, resulting in the evidence-tampering charge.
The negligent-use charge alleges Calanchi discharged the firearm in a manner that endangered another person while he was under the influence of alcohol.
Deming Police Department Detective R. Parra of the Criminal Investigation Division is handling the case. The charges are allegations, and Calanchi is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
