DEMING — Residents will have an opportunity to meet local law enforcement officers and first responders when National Night Out returns to Deming on Tuesday, August 4.
The community event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Luna County Courthouse Park, 700 S. Silver Avenue. The event is being hosted by the Deming Luna County MainStreet Program.
Promotional materials advertise music and opportunities for residents to connect with local, county, state and federal public-safety agencies. Participating organizations shown on the event flyer include the Deming Police Department, Luna County Sheriff’s Office, area fire departments, New Mexico State Police and the U.S. Border Patrol.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement agencies and the people they serve. Events also promote neighborhood cooperation, crime-prevention awareness and positive interaction between residents and first responders.
Deming will be one of several New Mexico communities participating on August 4. A regional National Night Out celebration is scheduled in downtown Las Cruces from 6 to 9 p.m. at Plaza de Las Cruces. Events are also planned in communities throughout the state, including Albuquerque, Belen and Santa Fe.
Across the country, National Night Out events can include neighborhood gatherings, festivals, cookouts, games, public-safety demonstrations and opportunities for families to meet police officers, firefighters and community-service organizations.
The nationwide observance is traditionally held on the first Tuesday in August. Texas and certain other participating areas hold their National Night Out activities on the first Tuesday in October.
What began as an effort encouraging neighbors to turn on their porch lights and spend time together has grown into a national movement involving law enforcement agencies and millions of residents working to create safer and more connected communities.
