DEMING — Deming schools will open for the first day of the new school year on Monday, July 27, with campuses beginning on their regular daily schedules.
Drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert and allow extra time during the morning and afternoon commute as students return to sidewalks, crosswalks and school bus routes throughout the community. Law enforcement officers are expected to monitor traffic and speeds in and around school zones during the back-to-school period.
Motorists should be especially cautious near school buses. When a bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, traffic must stop. Drivers should watch carefully for children who may cross in front of the bus or enter the roadway unexpectedly.
Yellow flashing bus lights are a warning that the bus is preparing to stop. Drivers should slow down and be ready to stop. Avoid passing a bus that is loading or unloading students, and do not block crosswalks or intersections near school campuses.
Families are also encouraged to remind children to use designated crossings, look both ways before entering the street and follow directions from crossing guards and school staff.
A safe start to the school year depends on everyone sharing the road carefully and watching out for Deming’s students.
