LORDSBURG – New Mexico State Police arrested a wanted fugitive Monday after a two-hour standoff at a Hidalgo County residence.
Police said officers received information at about 11:45 a.m. July 27 that Cassandra Barker, 30, was believed to be inside the home. Officers conducted surveillance and confirmed she was there.
According to State Police, Barker spoke with officers by telephone several times but denied being inside the residence and disconnected the calls. Officers continued negotiations and requested additional resources, including the New Mexico State Police Tactical Team.
Police said Barker voluntarily left the residence after about two hours and was taken into custody without incident. She was booked into the Hidalgo County Detention Center.
Barker was arrested on three outstanding felony warrants, including two counts of possession of a controlled substance and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. She was also charged with resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.
State Police said Barker has prior arrests involving armed robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery on a peace officer, battery on a peace officer, child abuse, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and extreme cruelty to animals.
Police said Barker’s juvenile son was inside the residence during the incident. The child was not injured and was released safely to family members at the scene.
All persons mentioned are innocent until possibly found guilty by a court.
