DEMING – Stargazers will have two opportunities to explore the wonders of the September night sky as Astronomy Friends of The Parks launches its fall and winter astronomy program schedule with back-to-back events near Deming.
The first program will be held Friday, September 11, at Rockhound State Park. The second takes place Saturday, September 12, at City of Rocks State Park. Sunset is expected at approximately 7:15 p.m. both evenings.
Weather permitting, each program will begin about 20 minutes after sunset with a laser-guided tour highlighting planets, constellations and other notable objects visible in the evening sky. Visitors will then be invited to look through telescopes with assistance from members of Astronomy Friends of The Parks. Each program is expected to last approximately two hours.
Friday’s Rockhound State Park program will be held at the viewing patio just west of the Visitors’ Center. Saturday’s City of Rocks program will take place at the Orion Group Campsite, home of the Gene and Elizabeth Simon Observatory.
Visitors are encouraged to bring a small red-colored flashlight, which helps preserve night vision while walking around the observing area. Loaner lights will be available for those who do not have one.
Both events are subject to weather conditions. Visitors should contact the parks or check for alerts before traveling. Regular New Mexico State Parks pass fees will apply.

Astronomy Friends of The Parks is a group of advanced amateur astronomers from the local area who volunteer alongside park staff to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with both new and experienced stargazers.
