DEMING – The City of Deming will hold a community information meeting Thursday, August 27, concerning the proposed renewal and modification of the Butterfield Trail Regional Landfill’s state solid-waste permit.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Deming City Council Chambers at Deming City Hall, 1275 E. Pine Street.
The city is requesting that the New Mexico Environment Department renew the landfill’s existing solid-waste facility permit for another 20 years.
The Butterfield Trail Regional Landfill currently accepts municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, petroleum-contaminated soil, sludge, industrial solid waste and animal-processing waste.
The proposed permit modification would allow vertical and lateral expansion of the existing landfill. The project would add Phases 2 and 3, covering approximately 54.6 additional acres, and provide approximately 54 feet of additional vertical waste capacity in Units 2 through 6.
According to the New Mexico Environment Department, the landfill site encompasses approximately 318 acres and is located about 15 miles west of Deming and one-half mile north of Interstate 10.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend, ask questions and provide comments. Written comments may also be submitted during the meeting or by mail.
