WNMU Launches New Arboriculture and Urban Forestry Certificate Program

SILVER CITY – Western New Mexico University (WNMU) is introducing a new Arboriculture and Urban Forestry Certificate Program designed to prepare students for careers in tree care, environmental conservation and the management of urban green spaces.

The program comes as communities across the Southwest face rising temperatures, drought conditions and increasing environmental challenges. University officials say the certificate will provide students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to maintain healthy trees and develop sustainable community landscapes.

Students will receive classroom instruction and hands-on training in tree biology, soil health, pest management, sustainable landscaping and urban forest management. The curriculum also includes tree climbing, planting, pruning, chainsaw safety, tree identification and assessing the health and safety of existing trees.

Graduates will be prepared to pursue careers as arborists, urban foresters, tree climbers, urban forestry planners and forestry technicians.

WNMU Assistant Project Director Erik Geyer said the program complements the university’s ongoing sustainability efforts, including campus gardens, orchards and environmental improvement projects.

“Trees are vital infrastructure in the urban environment and often require careful attention. Well rounded tree care professionals are key to preserving our existing trees and future canopy,” Geyer said.

Students will have opportunities to participate in practical conservation projects on the Silver City campus and throughout Grant County, gaining experience in managing trees and public green spaces.

The program is designed for traditional college students, community members and working professionals interested in entering the environmental field or expanding their existing qualifications.

Western New Mexico University is partnering with the United States Forest Service, the Southwest New Mexico Community Forestry Network and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to offer the program.

Enrollment is now open through the university’s admissions office for upcoming academic semesters.
