DEMING – Drivers in Deming and throughout Luna County can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence during August as the New Mexico State Police conduct sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and registration, insurance, and driver’s license checkpoints.
The enforcement effort is part of a statewide campaign aimed at reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities caused by impaired driving. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or arrange alternate transportation if alcohol or drugs will be involved.
Beyond Luna County, New Mexico State Police say similar enforcement operations will take place in all 33 counties throughout the month of August. The statewide initiative is designed to discourage impaired driving while also ensuring motorists are properly licensed, insured, and operating legally registered vehicles.
State Police say the increased visibility of officers, combined with public awareness campaigns, has helped change attitudes toward driving under the influence. Officials emphasize that many lives could be saved each year if drivers choose not to get behind the wheel while impaired.
The enforcement campaign is supported through overtime grant funding provided by the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Division. The funding helps local law enforcement agencies statewide conduct traffic safety enforcement, training, education, and equipment purchases in high-risk areas as part of New Mexico’s ongoing effort to reduce impaired driving and improve roadway safety.
