DEMING – Motorists traveling in Luna County and surrounding southwest New Mexico areas should expect lane closures, flagging operations, reduced speeds and possible delays during roadway projects scheduled for the week of Aug. 9 through 16.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation will continue chip-seal operations on roadways in the Deming area of Luna County. Work is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drivers may encounter flagging personnel, pilot vehicles and temporary stops. Brooming will occur during and after the sealing process, and loose gravel may remain on road surfaces for several days.
Chip-seal work is scheduled on various Interstate 10 frontage roads in the Akela area. Crews are also fog sealing NM 418, known as Old Lordsburg Highway, from milepost 0 to 14.1. Center striping will be absent in work zones until the projects are complete.
At NM 11 and El Paso Avenue, just north of the Columbus Port of Entry, paving has been completed for a box culvert project. Crews will remain on site for guardrail placement. Lane closures and flagging operations may be in place, and reduced speed limits will remain in effect. Work hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with completion expected this fall.
In Silver City, Terracon Consultants will collect soil samples for an upcoming project at US 180 and NM 90 East Broadway. Lane closures may be used from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. That work is expected to be completed by Aug. 14.
Drivers are asked to reduce speed, obey posted signs and use caution around workers, heavy equipment and changing traffic patterns. Double fines for speeding in work zones may be in effect. Conditions are subject to change without notice.
