DEMING – Motorists traveling Interstate 10 east of Deming should prepare for lane restrictions, reduced speed limits and temporary ramp closures as the New Mexico Department of Transportation begins a multi-phase pavement preservation project in Luna County.
The project represents an investment of more than $3 million in improvements to Interstate 10 between Exit 85, Deming East, and Exit 116 at New Mexico Highway 549. Construction is expected to continue into early 2027.
The first phase began Monday, October 26, with Dismuke Construction Company conducting a $1.2 million crack-sealing project. Crews will begin at Exit 85 and work east toward Exit 116.
During this phase, motorists can expect lane closures and reduced speed limits. Work is scheduled seven days a week, from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.
A second phase is expected to begin on or about Monday, November 16, when Mountain States Constructors starts a $1.9 million milling and paving operation on Interstate 10 ramps and approaches between the same exits.
That portion of the project will require temporary closures of entrance and exit ramps as construction progresses. Work will take place Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Once weather conditions and temperatures permit, NMDOT maintenance crews will complete the final phase by applying a fog seal to the treated pavement and replacing pavement markings.
The overall project is designed to preserve the existing roadway surface, improve pavement conditions and extend the useful life of this heavily traveled section of Interstate 10.
Transportation officials remind drivers to reduce their speed, follow posted construction signs and remain alert for workers and equipment throughout the project area.
Motorists are encouraged to allow additional travel time, particularly when construction crews are working near interstate ramps.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2027, depending on weather and construction conditions.
