WNMU Sin Fronteras Workshop Inspires Student Writers

DEMING – Western New Mexico University recently wrapped up its final Sin Fronteras Creative Writing Project for Undergraduate Students.

The program, organized by Associate Professor of English Composition Heather Frankland, brought together 13 students for workshops focused on storytelling, poetry, literature, and the many meanings of borders.

The project featured professional guest writers and teachers, including JJ Amaworo Wilson, Fabienne Josaphat, Miguel De La Cruz, Melanie Sweeney, and Frankland.

Students explored international and regional literature while creating new prose and poetry. Organizers said the workshops also helped students experience writing as part of a supportive creative community.

Student Laisha Vargas said the program strengthened her poetry and helped her see literature in new ways.

Frankland said this was the third and final year of Sin Fronteras, adding that the project gave students a unique opportunity to grow as writers and connect with others.

The program was supported through the WNMU Foundation President’s Society Program Support.
