DEMING – Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County is looking for volunteer drivers to help transport local cancer patients to treatment and medical appointments.
The nonprofit provides free transportation assistance for cancer patients in Deming and Luna County, including van rides to out-of-town appointments and gas voucher help for qualifying patients. The organization also offers patient support, referrals, education, a cancer resource library, wigs, hats, scarves, breast prostheses, limited medical equipment, early detection assistance, and other support services for patients and families facing cancer. (Share New Mexico)
Volunteer drivers must have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and be able to commit to at least one day per week. The need is especially important because many cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation, are not available locally, meaning patients often must travel outside Deming for care. Cancer Support officials say volunteer drivers do more than provide a ride. They help remove one of the biggest barriers facing patients during treatment: reliable transportation. For many patients, that ride can mean getting to a lifesaving appointment without the added worry of how to get there.
For more information, call Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County at 575-546-4780 or stop by the office at 217 North Country Club Road in Deming.
