DEMING – The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Luna County, including Deming and Columbus, as dangerous heat settles into southern New Mexico this week.
The first advisory remains in effect from noon until 9 p.m. Monday. A second Heat Advisory will be in effect from noon Tuesday until 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters say temperatures could reach as high as 108 degrees across portions of the lower Mimbres Basin and surrounding desert areas.
The prolonged heat increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for people working outdoors, older adults, young children, and those without access to air conditioning.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours whenever possible.
Officials also recommend taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations during outdoor work. Anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion should be moved to a cool place immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires calling 911.
The advisory remains in effect through Wednesday evening as temperatures continue to climb across the region.
