DEMING – A Deming food tradition with roots in the community’s Czech heritage will return Sunday, Oct. 18, when Holy Family Church holds its 98th annual Klobase and BBQ at Deming Courthouse Park.
The festival grew from the Czech and Eastern European families who settled in the Deming area in the 1920s. Many were cotton farmers who had come from south Texas. Their traditions became part of the community, and the annual meal has carried one of them forward for nearly a century.
Klobase, a Czech sausage, will be served alongside barbecue, beans, coleslaw and potato salad. Meals cost $12 and will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Desserts and drinks will be available for purchase.
The day will also include three $50 door prizes. Winners do not need to be present to claim their prizes. Bingo is scheduled from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.
