Hollywood Takes the Spotlight at WNMU for Homecoming 2026 and Chile Bowl Rivalry

DEMING – Western New Mexico University is preparing to roll out the red carpet for Homecoming 2026, with a week of Hollywood-themed activities culminating in one of New Mexico’s longstanding college football rivalries.

“Hollywood Homecoming 2026” will run October 5 through 10 on the WNMU campus in Silver City, leading up to the Chile Bowl matchup between the WNMU Mustangs and Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds on Saturday, October 10.

Homecoming events begin Thursday, October 8, with the WNMU Alumni Golf Classic at 9 a.m. at Scott Park.

On Friday, October 9, WNMU will hold its Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and recognize Gold Circle Graduates at 2 p.m. at Light Hall Theater. The Red Carpet Bonfire and Pep Rally will follow from 8 to 10 p.m. near the residence halls, bringing together student-athletes, spirit squads, students and fans.

Saturday’s activities begin with the Hollywood Parade at 9:30 a.m. along Bullard Street in downtown Silver City. Floats, marching bands and student organizations will make their way toward the university campus.

A tailgate party begins at 11:30 a.m. outside Ben Altamirano Field, followed by kickoff of the Chile Bowl at 2 p.m.

“The Chile Bowl is always a main-event matchup on our calendar,” WNMU Director of Athletics Matt Enriquez said. Enriquez said the rivalry carries special meaning for the university, community and fans, adding that this year’s Hollywood theme will bring additional energy to Homecoming weekend.

The rivalry between Western New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico dates back more than 90 years. The teams first met October 12, 1934, playing to a 6-6 tie in Silver City.

The rivalry was formally named the Chile Bowl in 2018, with a traveling trophy awarded to the winner of the annual Lone Star Conference matchup.

Tickets for the October 10 football game are available in advance through the WNMU Athletics ticket office and online. Game-day ticket booths at Ben Altamirano Field will open two hours before the 2 p.m. kickoff.
